Crafted at the Atomic Level: The Precision of Electrodeposition
Among all methods of producing metal foil, electrodeposition (electroforming) is the only process route capable of atomic-level thickness control. Unlike conventional rolling, electrodeposited nickel foil is not thinned by physical rolling; instead, nickel atoms "grow" layer by layer on the cathode surface. Building material at the microscopic scale in this way gives electrodeposited nickel foil a range of unique performance advantages.
CIVEN Metal's electrodeposited nickel foil line covers an ultra-thin range from 5 to 50 microns, with purity above 99.97% (99.99% ultra-high-purity versions available on request). In this thickness range, conventional rolling struggles: the material is too thin to withstand the mechanical stress of multiple rolling passes, while electrodeposition handles it with ease. By precisely controlling current density, electrolyte temperature, pH and additive formulation, we hold every micron of thickness to within ±0.5 μm.
Another unique advantage of electrodeposited nickel foil is its non-oriented crystal structure. Rolled metal foil usually has a distinct rolling texture, making its mechanical properties anisotropic (different strength and ductility in different directions), whereas the grains of electrodeposited foil grow isotropically, delivering consistent performance in every in-plane direction. This is especially important for applications that require uniform stress distribution or conductivity in all directions.
In recent years, with the explosive growth of the EV and energy storage markets, the strategic value of electrodeposited nickel foil as a key battery material has become increasingly clear. In particular, in the development of next-generation storage technologies such as solid-state and sodium-ion batteries, high-purity ultra-thin nickel foil has drawn wide attention for its excellent chemical stability and interface compatibility. CIVEN Metal has positioned itself early in this field and has established joint R&D partnerships with several leading battery companies.
